The creators of the cooperative shooter Warframe have unveiled the “1999” global expansion, transporting players to the previous millennium when there was widespread fear of computer system failures at the dawn of the 21st century. These fears turn out to be warranted as biomechanical infected creatures besiege computer systems, and their leader can only be vanquished with the aid of six vintage Protoframes.
The primary adversaries for players are the lethal Infested Liches, cunningly masquerading as the boy band “Technocyte Coda,” each with unique combat abilities. They face off against the new Warframe “CYTE-09,” a sniper donning a classic beret, equipped with distinctive weapons and an “Atomicycle” motorcycle that doubles as a bomb-laden fireship.
The showcased trailer features the protagonist weaving through city streets on the motorcycle, executing flips, evading tank fire, and calling in aerial support. The developers have incorporated gameplay elements reminiscent of that era, enabling players to interact via email, enjoy monitor screensavers, and exchange romantic text messages.
Warframe | 1999 is set for a winter 2024 release across all platforms, with the prologue anticipated to arrive in August of this year.
