Tokyo Game Show at a glance

The inaugural Tokyo Game Show (TGS) took place from August 22 to 24, 1996, in Chiba, near Japan’s capital. The event attracted 109,000 visitors and featured 365 games. Between 1997 and 2002, TGS was a biannual event, occurring in both spring and autumn. However, from 2003 onwards, it has been an annual event. The 2020 and 2021 editions were held online due to the coronavirus pandemic.

PRIORITY SIGNAL

The Tokyo Game Show has also been a platform for showcasing projects for upcoming consoles. For instance, in the spring of 1999, a year before the PlayStation 2 went on sale, TGS displayed future classics for Sony’s second console. Notable titles included Tekken TAG Tournament, Dark Cloud, and Gran Turismo 2000, later renamed Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec.

image 30

A comparable event occurred in 2005 when Hideo Kojima presented Metal Gear Solid 4 | Guns of the Patriots on a PlayStation 3 development kit, with the console releasing the following year. Similarly, in 2013, Ryse | Son of Rome for Xbox One and Killzone | Shadow Fall for PS4 were showcased before the consoles were available on the market.

Moreover, at Tokyo Game Show, companies often behave more boldly than at other exhibitions. For example, in 2023, real strippers danced at the SEGA booth. Some activists expressed outrage over these actions and called for a boycott of the publisher, yet their efforts were in vain. Conversely, the players commended the organizers for their daring and the aesthetic appeal of the presentations.

image 7

At the Tokyo Game Show, a significant portion of the exhibition is devoted to games from the Land of the Rising Sun. American companies, including Microsoft, also participate in the event. Besides featuring upcoming games, TGS offers a variety of products for sale, hosts esports and cosplay competitions, and facilitates business meetings.

Schedule of key conferences

  • Xbox – September 26;
  • Capcom — September 26;
  • Metal Gear Solid Delta – September 27;
  • SEGA / Atlus – September 27;
  • Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D – September 27;
  • Life is Strange | Double Exposure – September 28;
  • Death Stranding 2 – September 29;
  • Silent Hill 2 – September 29;
  • Square Enix — September 29

Special Preview

On Wednesday, September 17, a special broadcast titled “Special Preview” will take place. During this event, the Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association (CESA) will release the latest details about the booths, stages, and equipment set to be featured at Tokyo Game Show 2024.

Sony

In recent years, Sony has not participated in the Japanese exhibition, opting instead to concentrate on its own State of Play. However, in 2024, the company will attend the conference. It is highly likely that Sony will present Death Stranding 2 | On the Beach, a temporary PS5 exclusive. Hideo Kojima is confirmed to make an appearance at TGS.

Neil Druckmann, famed for his work on the Uncharted and The Last of Us series, might make an appearance at the exhibition. It’s acknowledged that he’s currently developing a new game, although an official announcement has not been made.

Nintendo

Nintendo skipped Gamescom 2024 but is set to appear at the Tokyo Game Show. The event is expected to showcase Switch exclusives, such as The Legend of Zelda | Echoes of Wisdom, slated for release on the conference’s opening day. Fans of Samus Aran are eager for more information on Metroid Prime 4 | Beyond. It’s also possible that Nintendo will reveal details about the anticipated new console, which is rumored to be announced soon.

Sega

Developers from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, famed for the Yakuza series, are set to unveil a new game. The specifics remain undisclosed, but speculation suggests it could be related to the spin-off, Lost Judgment.

Additionally, fresh details about Sonic X Shadows Generations are anticipated. There are also indications of a resurgence of classic franchises, with Crazy Taxi being a likely candidate. Moreover, there’s the possibility of a new installment in the Golden Axe series.

image 9

Square Enix

It’s too early for specific details about the third chapter of the Final Fantasy 7 remake. However, Square Enix has much to offer players. We are looking forward to the re-release of Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D and new content for Kingdom Hearts 4.

Atlus

The series publisher of Persona and Shin Megami Tensei has now shifted focus to Metaphor | ReFantazio. This vibrant anime-style JRPG is crafted in the tradition of the company’s earlier works, and is a must-see for fans of Japanese role-playing games.

Dataminers have uncovered that a significant DLC is in the works for the Persona 3 remake. It is speculated that an announcement could be made at Tokyo Game Show 2024.

PRIORITY SIGNAL

Ubisoft

From the French publisher, we anticipate the release of Assassin’s Creed | Shadows. However, its portrayal in Japan is a bold move, considering the game’s reception by the residents of the Land of the Rising Sun.

image 24

Microsoft

Microsoft’s participation in the Tokyo Game Show 2024 was announced two weeks prior to the event’s commencement. The company plans to showcase upcoming titles from Activision Blizzard, Xbox Game Studios, and Bethesda. Additionally, a selection of games from third-party partner studios based in Japan and other Asian countries will be featured at the event, with many slated to join Game Pass upon their release.

Microsoft typically reserves its major announcements for its own conferences. For instance, the Xbox Game Showcase highlighted ongoing development for Doom | The Dark Ages and Gears of War | E-Day. At TGS 2024, attendees anticipate further demonstrations of these titles. However, the primary focus is expected to be on games from Asian developers.

image 31

Bandai Namco

The conference is likely to feature the three-dimensional fighting game Dragon Ball | Sparking! Zero, set in the universe of the anime series Dragon Ball | Doragon bôru. Additionally, Tekken fans are hopeful that new fighters will be announced for the eighth installment of the series.

image 25

Koei Tecmo

The publisher is set to showcase Dynasty Warriors | Origins at the exhibition, the latest installment in the series known for its battles against hordes of enemies. Additionally, there’s buzz about a collaboration with Pocketpair, the creators of Palworld, which might lead to the unveiling of the game’s PS5 version.

image 10

Konami

At TGS 2024, it is likely that the company will showcase gameplay videos of the remakes for Silent Hill 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3 | Snake Eater. Additionally, there are whispers of development on a new installment in the Castlevania series. A significant announcement may be expected at the event.

PRIORITY SIGNAL

Capcom

The publisher’s primary focus will be on Monster Hunter Wilds. Nonetheless, there is a possibility of an announcement regarding the ninth installment of Resident Evil at the exhibition, which was hinted at in Capcom’s unofficial roadmap. Additionally, there may be news about remakes of the series’ earlier entries and updates to Dragon’s Dogma 2.

Monster Hunter Wilds - 3rd Trailer | Lala Barina & Scarlet Forest Reveal | PS5 Games

Rumors suggest that Hideki Kamiya, the creator of the original Resident Evil 2, the first Devil May Cry, and the underappreciated Okami, left Capcom in 2007. He was with PlatinumGames until 2023, where he led the development of the Bayonetta trilogy.

Shinji Mikami

Shinji Mikami is renowned for creating the first and fourth installments of Resident Evil, as well as Vanquish and the original The Evil Within. His career includes tenures at Capcom, Platinum Games, and the now-defunct Tango Gameworks. It is speculated that at TGS 2024, he might reveal plans to establish his own studio.

image 21

Minimum Studio

The Korean company Minimum Studio is set to showcase Cats Go!, a tower defense game infused with elements of Among Us. In this game, three players will command cats tasked with defending their village against demons, while a fourth player will secretly undermine their efforts, siding with evil to sabotage the valiant felines’ defense of their homeland. The game is slated for release on September 25, coinciding with the Tokyo Game Show.

image 24

Drecom Co.

Drecom Co. studio is set to present their new project, Tokyo Stories, at TGS 2024. This adventure game features three-dimensional environments and pixel graphics reminiscent of late 90s titles. As players delve into the game, they will uncover the dark secrets hidden within the city. Attendees will have the opportunity to experience a playable demo version of Tokyo Stories at the event.

image 26

MBA International

Nintendo Switch enthusiasts can look forward to a new title from MBA International, Steamboat Rescue. This steamship control simulator tasks players with saving drowning animals as swiftly as possible while avoiding obstacles. The Joy-Con controller serves as the steering wheel, enhancing the immersive experience.

image 6

TOKYOTOON Inc.

TOKYOTOON Inc. is set to showcase two projects at the Tokyo Game Show. The first, Melt Away, is a visual novel by Overcast Studios that combines melancholic themes with gentle music and watercolor-styled graphics, delving into profound topics of life and death. Visitors can experience a demo of Melt Away at the TOKYOTOON booth. The second project, Children of Belgrade Metro from Summertime, was released in Japan four years ago and is now gearing up for an international release in multiple major languages. This adventure game unfolds in an alternate Serbia, where the Golden Dawn corporation is on the hunt for individuals with psychic abilities.

image 23

Asmik Ace

The puzzle game Sunset Hills was released on August 21. It revolves around the adventures of a man recently discharged from the military embarking on a journey. Throughout the game, he encounters former military comrades, and players uncover the protagonist’s secrets and ultimate objectives.

The Japanese version of Sunset Hills will be available on Steam starting October 3. The game’s publishers, Asmik Ace, will present the project at TGS 2024, offering an opportunity for all to experience it.

image 29

Ovomind

Ovomind is set to present its new smart bracelets and showcase the game Dead Shadows by Marc Albinet, famed for his contributions to Dying Light 2 and the Assassin’s Creed series. TGS 2024 attendees will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in Dead Shadows within a soundproof Gamebox chamber. The game uniquely adapts its narrative and gameplay based on the player’s emotions, presenting a fascinating glimpse into the practical application of such technology.

Marca Albine, known for directing Dying Light 2 and Assassin’s Creed Unity, is now working on the innovative project, Dead Shadows.

Cross the Ages

Cross the Ages is a collectible card game that combines fantasy, science fiction, and post-apocalypse. It actively uses the Immutable X blockchain and NFT technology, thanks to which its digital assets can have value in the real world.

TGS 2024 will feature a new dimension of Artellium, as well as the unique Arkhante and Mantris map sets. Moreover, at the exhibition they can be seen in physical form. According to the publisher, this is the next stage in the development of the Cross the Ages universe.

image 22

XR Summits 2025

The XR Summits are scheduled for August 11 to 13, 2025, showcasing future technologies with a significant impact on esports. Meanwhile, the Tokyo Game Show offers a chance to engage with pioneering video game developers, new hardware creators, and skilled programmers involved in the industry.

image 27

Moimate Inc.

Moimate Inc., known for its gaming equipment, is set to unveil the unique Rushbox controller at TGS 2024. This controller lacks joysticks but features six additional buttons compared to PS5 and Xbox Series controllers. It’s compatible with various game genres, yet it excels in fighting games, much like Street Fighter 6.

image 15

Ad-Virtua

This company is focused on advertising. Its newest software enables developers to effortlessly integrate different advertisements into monitors, large displays, and billboards within their games. This process doesn’t require any code modification—simply “drag” the advertisement block, similar to operations in Windows. At TGS 2024, attendees will have the chance to witness this technology in action and receive complimentary listings valued at up to 1 million yen.

image 11
In world cinema, hidden advertising is a frequent occurrence. For instance, in the classic film Blade Runner, there is a notable mention of Atari.

About Tokyo Game Show Digital World 2024

If attending TGS 2024 in person isn’t an option, you can utilize the service offered by CESA (Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association). A VR headset is required for this service, which allows you to navigate the exhibition halls and booths of the Tokyo Game Show in a virtual environment. This service is accessible from September 20th until October 6th.
