During last year’s The Game Awards, developer Hideo Kojima officially announced his new project, a horror game named OD (Overdose), in collaboration with ‘Get Out’ director and actor Jordan Peele.
To date, only a brief teaser and some gameplay rumors have surfaced, with no concrete details. What is known is that OD is an Unreal Engine 5 game, set to launch on Xbox, featuring a cast of Hollywood stars.
A recent leak purportedly reveals certain gameplay aspects, offering fans a preliminary insight into the experience OD may offer upon its release.
OD | The latest rumors about the gameplay
This information originates from DuskGolem, known to be a fairly reliable source. DuskGolem shared on Discord the details as remembered by an individual who had previously playtested OD. It’s possible that Kojima Productions may have altered their approach since those playtests occurred.
“What I remember from Overdose is that the game was trying to be an experimental experience that involved players using media to make discoveries in the game. There were large cinematic scenes leading to active and passive gameplay of two genres, the first where they had to use, watch and guide the characters, while using information they got from other sources, such as websites,” Dusk Golem said.
He explained how the ability to switch between first- and third-person perspectives aids characters in navigating the environment. Detailing the second gameplay style, Dusk Golem noted:
“The second game element included player-oriented first-person pieces that played more traditionally like a horror game, but with a similar cryptographic mystery puzzle function and a lack of motion pictures like the first part.”
It appears that players will manage the characters as they would in a typical survival horror game, but at times, the perspective may shift, allowing players to simultaneously control several characters.
