Several series from early 2024 have been officially released, including the Three-Body Problem, which has generated considerable discussion, and Amazon’s Fallout series, which has continued the trend of high-quality video game adaptations, making the anticipation for the second season of The Last of Us somewhat more tolerable.

However, there’s much to anticipate, including new Star Wars spin-offs and eagerly awaited new seasons of familiar series. Whether you’re a TV series enthusiast or simply seeking a beacon of hope to mark the end of spring, there’s plenty on the horizon.
Acolyte
June 4, Disney+
Developed by Leslye Headland, The Acolyte stands out as one of the most captivating additions to the Star Wars series since Andor. Set towards the close of the Republic era, roughly a century prior to Star Wars | Episode I – The Phantom Menace, this mystery thriller revolves around a Jedi Master’s investigation into a sequence of crimes.

The eight-episode series features Amandla Stenberg, Lee Jong-jae, Manny Jacinto, Daphne Keene, and Carrie-Anne Moss. Similar to Andor, the Acolyte is anticipated to delve into the darker aspects of a distant galaxy. While the former show centered on relatable human narratives, the new series is set to showcase numerous Force and lightsaber wielders. The trailer suggests a thought-provoking yet consistently captivating murder mystery that reimagines the classic battle between Good and Evil, Light and Dark, within the franchise.
House of the Dragon, Season 2
June 17, HBO
Those who were disappointed by the final season of a certain series may be hesitant to embrace another spin-off set in George R.R. Martin’s universe. However, the debut of House of the Dragon offers enough of what fans cherished in its predecessor to quiet the skeptics. Transporting viewers back to a time when the notorious Targaryen family reigned not only deepens our understanding of Daenerys’s origins but also introduces us to new, formidable women. These characters, from Rhaenyra’s ascent to power to Alicent’s subtle schemes, ensure their children’s dominion over the Seven Kingdoms.

The family tension, long-simmering in the series, escalated irreversibly in the first season when Alicent’s son Aemond and his dragon Vhagar killed Rhaenyra’s son Lucerys and his dragon Arrax. This tragic event will surely shape the upcoming season’s direction, as Rhaenyra grieves for her son and, with her supporters, the “blacks,” seeks retribution against the “greens.” The anticipation builds for Season 2’s premiere later this year, promising a thrilling continuation of the saga.
The Umbrella Academy Season 4
August 8, Netflix
Following three thrilling seasons of superhero escapades, the Hargreeves siblings make a comeback for a fourth and conclusive season. Adapted from the comic book series by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, the upcoming season of The Umbrella Academy will delve into the consequences of season three’s Kugelblitz, where the majority of the Hargreeves found themselves powerless and stranded in an entirely reset universe after Allison hit the reset button.

Luther’s wife, Sloane, is missing, Diego and Laila have eloped to start a family, and it appears the family is disintegrating. The concluding season teases the introduction of new characters and adversaries whom the Hargreeves will confront without their powers.
Andor, Season 2
Fall TBA, Disney+
While the release date for Season 2 of “Andor” has not been announced, there is hope that the critically acclaimed series will premiere in the fall. Early in 2023, at the Star Wars celebration in London, a teaser was unveiled, heightening the anticipation. The teaser featured Cassian Andor at the forefront of the rebellion, continuing his journey from the end of Season 1, where he embraced his role in the larger cause. The trailer also hinted at the evolving storylines of Kyle Soller, Adria Arjona, Denise Gough, Faye Marsay, Varad Setou, Genevieve O’Reilly, Stellan Skarsgård, Elizabeth Dulau, James McArdle, and Muhannad Bhaier, whose fates are intricately linked to the unfolding events.

Undoubtedly, “Andor” emerged as one of the standout series of 2022. With Gilroy’s profound grasp of impactful storytelling, coupled with a formidable team of writers and directors, as well as a stellar cast, the series transcended the typical “space opera.” It demonstrated to audiences that Star Wars can still deliver stories with depth and resonance, akin to the narratives George Lucas originally envisioned in the classic trilogy.
Daredevil | Born Again
TBA, Disney+
Although Marvel appears to be scaling back its television series production, anticipation is high for one of its few slated releases in 2024 | Daredevil | Born Again. This series, featuring Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock—a blind lawyer by day and vigilante by night—continues the character’s journey. Following appearances in Spider-Man | No Way Home and She-Hulk | Attorney at Law, Born Again marks the first in-depth exploration of Matt’s narrative since the end of Netflix’s Daredevil in 2018.

The series is anticipated to carry on the narrative begun in Echo, which debuted in 2024, with Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio returning as the Devil from Hell’s Kitchen and the Kingpin, respectively, in both series. Born Again will also mark the comeback of Frank Castle, portrayed by Jon Bernthal, last appearing in The Punisher’s second season. Fans are keen to discover the fate of the lawyer who doubles as an avenger and his actions upon full integration into the MCU.
Penguin
Autumn TBA, Max
Following the demise of mafia boss Carmine Falcone, his trusted lieutenant Oswald Cobblepot, known as the Penguin, believes it’s his turn to ascend as the new leader. However, Falcone’s daughter Sofia is determined to uphold her father’s criminal empire. A fierce struggle for power ensues in the shadows of Gotham.

“The Penguin” series is a spin-off from Matt Reeves’ “The Batman,” with the action unfolding a week after the original film’s events. Colin Farrell, unrecognizable in makeup, portrays the Penguin, while Cristin Milioti takes on the role of Sofia Falcone.
