Game development is certainly not exempt from failure, and predicting such failure is an absolute impossibility. Occasionally, a game may be the talk of the town prior to its release, with development marked by engaging trailers, yet ultimately, it turns out to be a complete dud. Even high-profile PR campaigns and the involvement of renowned figures cannot prevent a disaster.
They showed promise, but…
We’ve put together a review of games that were anticipated to be extraordinary, yet ultimately, they did not rise to the level of masterpieces. This list is entirely subjective and could certainly be expanded with many more games of a similar nature.
Suicide Squad | Kill the Justice League
Rocksteady’s cooperative action game, released nine years after Batman | Arkham Knight, faced a wave of criticism even before hitting the market. Any positive expectations for this project quickly dissipated. The game, while continuing the famed Batman franchise, seemingly disregards elements of its universe. The emphasis is on numerous side quests rather than a substantial number of story missions, with gameplay centered around combat and gear collection. These side quests are monotonous, requiring hours to complete.

Additionally, “Suicide Squad | Kill the Justice League” lacks a comprehensive finale, as it was designed as a service game. The ongoing development of the conflict between superheroes and villains is set to continue in future seasons, with one season already available. Regrettably, the global update’s content has not met fan expectations. The volume of critical comments suggests that the game falls short of being considered a masterpiece.
The Lord of the Rings | Gollum
An action-platformer announced in 2019, after numerous delays, was released after four long years. Crafting a game to satisfy discerning Tolkien fans is challenging, yet it seems Daedalic Entertainment fell short of this ideal. Ultimately, the project stood out for its lackluster and unappealing visuals—Gollum’s portrayal being a prime example.

The gameplay appears dull and repetitive; the protagonist engages in wall-climbing, occasional stealth, and shows no progression throughout the narrative. The tasks are simplistic, the storyline is shallow, and many mechanics in The Lord of the Rings | Gollum fail to function properly.
Aliens | Colonial Marines
The project was poised for success with Gearbox’s development, SEGA’s publishing, a canonical plot, and the involvement of actual actors from the movie franchise, all signaling a potential masterpiece. Yet, the reality fell short of high expectations, transforming what was showcased as a dark horror shooter into a mediocre game plagued by numerous bugs and incomplete AI.

Aliens | Colonial Marines was not functional at its release. The reason was straightforward | Gearbox did not handle the development directly, but rather outsourced it to TimeGate, a third-party studio. TimeGate failed to meet deadlines and lost communication, forcing Gearbox to quickly take over the project again. With no time allocated for final testing and refinement, TimeGate shut down, leaving Gearbox’s CEO, Randy Pitchford, to address the issues in court for an extended period.
Sims 4
The project, initially named Olympus, was envisioned as a standalone MMO in The Sims series. Eventually, EA Games discarded this concept. Within a year, the development team had to transform the game into a single-player experience with a focus on polish and presentation. This pivot occurred under significant time constraints, leading to the omission of numerous features that were hallmarks of the franchise. While there are enhancements over the previous installment, they do not fully compensate for the game’s shortcomings.

The world in question turned out to be semi-open, and the seamless space was only so in name. Complaints arose due to the lackluster content at launch, which was only addressed in later expansions. Additionally, the utopian storytelling, the lack of distinctiveness in the sims, and sheer monotony are traits that fans of The Sims 4 have attributed to the game.
EFootball 2022
Turning to Konami’s football simulator, it aimed to rival EA Games’ iconic FIFA by leveraging cutting-edge technologies and a freemium distribution model. However, the absence of a joyful ovation was due to a multitude of flaws.

The absence of tactical options, erratic gameplay, obsolete and incomplete animations, along with various technical issues, have effectively doomed eFootball. It seems that a significant rival to FIFA was not meant to emerge as a formidable counter to EA’s production line.
Anthem
The cooperative shooter was anticipated to be Bioware’s next masterpiece. The project carried high expectations, largely due to the studio’s fame at its zenith. However, despite bold claims about the project’s magnitude, a prequel comic book campaign, and an array of related merchandise, success was not forthcoming.

The release highlighted significant issues | stunning graphics and impressive flight mechanics were overshadowed by a stark absence of engaging content. The narrative was dull and incomplete, and the cooperative play lost its appeal within an hour or two. Consequently, Anthem was deemed a failure, and any aspirations to overhaul the game faded into nonexistence.
Battlefield 2042
The initial excitement of fans for the latest installment of a cherished series soon turned to disillusionment. The creators had promised a novel project featuring extensive military engagements, stunning visuals, and numerous other appealing aspects. However, upon release, it became evident that the shooter game was not fully prepared for launch.

Bugs, flaws, and occasional breaches of physics have led to fan complaints. Moreover, the absence of a single-player campaign and alterations to traditional gameplay have sparked considerable skepticism. While one can enjoy playing Battlefield 2042, the prevalent negativity significantly tarnishes the overall experience.
Werewolf | The Apocalypse – Earthblood
The action game was intended to be an epic masterpiece, yet it fell short of expectations. The graphics are the first issue; they turned out to be quite unappealing, lacking any aesthetic appeal. The gameplay, which involves clearing monotonous and indistinct arenas, leads to sheer tedium. Moreover, despite the wide variety of enemy types, none manage to distinguish themselves from the masses.

The plot proved to be uneventful and predictable, contrary to expectations, with a world that was dull and repetitive. Even the key feature of Werewolf | The Apocalypse – Earthblood, which is the ability to transform the protagonist into one of three forms, fails to redeem the game’s shortcomings.
Biomutant
The journey of a ferret, from which much more was anticipated. The developers had been stoking interest in their product for years, heralding a real breakthrough and something truly remarkable. However, the game ultimately delivered a rather simplistic plot, formulaic combat, extensive grinding, and repetitive quests. Despite aiming for a vast world, the creators of Biomutant fell short in populating it with high-quality, compelling content.

The game ended up being awkward, and this awkwardness permeates nearly every aspect. Many ideas were incorporated into the project, yet none of them seemed to function as intended.
