On May 15, 2024, Ubisoft released the debut trailer for Assassin’s Creed Shadows. The game is set to launch on November 15, 2024, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
Plot and two main characters
The game is set in feudal Japan at the end of the 16th century, centering on the adventures of Yasuke, a dark-skinned samurai, and Naoe, a ninja girl. As the narrative unfolds, the destinies of these two distinct protagonists, initially at odds, become entwined, uniting them against a shared adversary.
Insiders have shed light on this vibrant pair even before the trailer’s release. Tom Henderson revealed that Yasuke starts as a slave aboard a ship. Following an attack where he loses his beloved, he survives and reaches Japan, eventually serving as a samurai under Oda Nobunaga.
Naoe’s story is equally poignant. She seeks to avenge her father, shinobi Fujibayashi Nagato. Insider j0nathan claims a close associate of Naoe falls to a member of the Order of the Ancients, propelling her into conflict.
In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, players can switch between Yasuke and Naoe, each with unique missions. Their combat styles contrast sharply | Yasuke is powerful, while Naoe is stealthy and nimble. They also possess distinct weapon arsenals.
Features of Assassin’s Creed Shadows

Players will have the opportunity to explore vibrant ports, cities, forests, farmlands, and many other captivating locales. The developers have endeavored to render the game’s map with historical accuracy. It will be partitioned into various provinces, with the world’s expanse akin to Egypt in Assassin’s Creed Origins. Castles, temples, and other structures will be depicted realistically, having been reconstructed on a 1:1 scale.
In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, the armaments will be true to the historical era of the narrative. Players can expect katanas, kanabo clubs, yari spears, shurikens, kunai knives, and kusarigama—a sickle attached to a chain. Shields will not be featured in the game; the developers have chosen to incorporate only armor for defense.
Dynamic lighting in Assassin’s Creed Shadows will revolutionize stealth tactics. Additionally, the gameplay will adapt to the dynamic seasonal changes. During warmer seasons, protagonists can conceal themselves in grass and shrubbery, but in winter, the barren landscape will offer no cover.
This new entry in the series promises to distinguish itself significantly from its predecessors.
Ubisoft’s plans for the game

Two expansions are planned for release in the future for Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which will be part of the Season Pass included in the Expanded Editions. The specifics of the DLC content remain undisclosed, but the dataminer Ubisoft_Frax has previously stated that the price for each expansion will be $25.

Additionally, the game is expected to feature an in-game store that uses a special currency called Helix, allowing players to purchase cosmetic items for weapons, armor, and more with virtual money.
The first criticism of Assassin’s Creed Shadows
Although the game’s release is still some time away, it has already faced criticism on social media. Gamers are forming opinions based on the debut trailer, which, at the time of this writing, has garnered 208 thousand likes and 273 thousand dislikes, with views surpassing 4 million.
Discontent arises from the fact that one of the main characters in the Japanese-themed action game is the dark-skinned warrior Yasuke. Some argue that featuring an African-American protagonist is an affront to Asian communities. Ubisoft has modeled this character after a historical figure, yet some gamers contend that Yasuke was not truly a samurai and therefore does not deserve such prominence.
There is a growing movement online urging people not to purchase Assassin’s Creed Shadows. The concern among players is that pre-orders were made available without any gameplay footage being shown, leading many to suggest waiting for additional videos to avoid potential buyer’s remorse.
