The release of Lionsgate’s film Borderlands begins on August 8. Critics, who started sharing their reviews yesterday, are in agreement | the movie adaptation of the game is a disaster.
Directed by Eli Roth, the film featured a star-studded cast including Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jamie Lee Curtis, Ariana Greenblatt, and Jack Black. However, fans of the video game bearing the same name were left bewildered by what they considered to be inappropriate casting choices.

Furthermore, the “PG-13” rating conflicted with the mature content and gritty style of the original games. This disparity between anticipation and the actual film heightened the dissatisfaction among both viewers and critics, who believed that Lionsgate should have handled the adaptation with greater fidelity and consideration for the franchise’s fanbase.
Journalists are criticizing the film for its outdated humor, subpar acting, and unsuccessful plot. Only Cate Blanchett, portraying the siren Lilith, and Jack Black, as the voice of the robot “Claptrap,” received commendation.
It’s worth noting that even before the premiere, insiders had leaked that Eli Roth’s project fared poorly in test screenings. Despite several reshoots and Tim Miller’s involvement as a “shadow director,” the film was not redeemed.
Here are a few quotes:
Adriano Caporusso from Bitesize Break
The Borderlands is a disaster with all the clichés imaginable. This movie changes the chaos and imagination of the games to lifeless, unfunny, and visually repulsive nonsense with annoying characters and a cast that doesn’t have a drop of chemistry in it.
Edgar Ortega of Loud and Clear Reviews
“Borderlands” feels like a film that, according to a top manager out of touch with reality, will appeal to “cool kids”. There is not a single serious moment with the characters, only disgusting jokes that become obsolete as soon as they fly out of the mouths of the actors. It’s not so bad, it’s even good. This is a mess, not a movie.
Matthew Simpson of Awesome Friday!
I really wanted to like the movie. But the uninspiring plot, inexpressive acting and getting stuck in a strange place, where everything looks expensive and cheap at the same time, turn the picture into a huge failure.
However, some still liked the film.
The Hollywood Handle
Borderlands is a fun action movie with a PG-13 rating. He completely relies on Cate Blanchett to get to the final. And the actress copes with it. And although there is nothing in the film that would make it stand out from other films, Borderlands is pleasant from beginning to end.
