Analytical agency Newzoo has published a fresh response to the results of the financial year 2023 in the gaming industry (it ended in March). It was about the growth of the market and the time that players spend in games. We have compiled important information into short theses.
- The PC and console market grew to $93.5 billion (up 2.6%).
- Fortnite dominates all platforms.
- Also at the top on PC, Xbox and PS5 are service games. The only exception was Starfield on Xbox.
- 80% of the playing time was spent on products released a few years ago. Few people are interested in new products. 60% of this number comes from games six years old or older.
- Fortnite, Roblox, League of Legends, Minecraft, and GTA V collectively took 27% of the total game time worldwide.
- In terms of new products, players spent 8% of their time playing Diablo IV and Baldur’s Gate 3.
Newzoo’s bottom line: it will be increasingly difficult for new products to build up their player base, especially against the backdrop of gamers’ obsession with game services.
We’d like to add that the fresh Helldivers 2 is a confirmation of that.
